Week of Respect (October 3, 2016-October 07, 2016)

During this week students will learn about respect and how to be more respectful.

Respect means to honor and to show consideration and value to people, property, the environment, and yourself. It means to treat others well even if they look, act, or believe differently than you do.

Here are some examples of the many ways that we can show respect to one another:

· Follow the Golden Rule and treat others the way that you want to be treated

· Be tolerant and accepting of differences

· Use good manners, not bad language

· Be considerate of the feelings of others

· Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone

· Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements

School Violence Awareness Week (October 17, 2016-October 21, 2016)

During this this week students will learn about the hurt and harm caused by bullying. They will also learn anti-bullying strategies and techniques.

Bullying happens when someone hurts or scares another person on purpose. The person being bullied has a hard time defending himself or herself. Usually, bullying happens over and over.

Sometimes bullying is easy to notice, such as with hitting or name calling, and other times it’s hard to see, like with leaving a person out or saying mean things behind someone’s back. Both boys and girls bully, and boys and get bullied. Bullying is not fair, and it hurts.

Here is how to deal with bullying:

· Tell your parents or other trusted adults

· If you are bullied at school, tell your teacher, school counselor, or principal. Telling is not tattling.

· Try not to show anger or fear

· Calmly tell the student to stop

· Try to avoid situations where bullying is likely to happen
