"When you control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his 'proper place' and will stay in it. You do not need to send him to the back door. He will go without being told. In fact, if there is no back door, he will cut one for his special benefit. His education makes it necessary. Carter G. Woodson

Social Studies Education in the 21st Century
Our theme for this year will be “Literacy in Social Studies”. The Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the full implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has transformed social studies education, positioning learners to transcend the limits of basic knowledge acquisition to engage a more challenging complexity; these changes stress critical-thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills. Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Thinking preparation, using a student centered emphasis on culturally relevant resources, will be at the cornerstone of our improved practice in the social studies classrooms. Inquiry based local research projects will provide the conceptual framework that allows students to place themselves at the center of their own education experience, make informed decisions, and practice productive citizenship.
