The Office of Curriculum and Instruction offers the following resources to provide access to the curriculum for all students using educational approaches that are specialized to meet the needs of diverse learners.
This intensive intervention is used with first grade students in Trenton who have been identified as at-risk for reading development. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention where individual students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. As soon as students can meet grade-level expectations and demonstrate that they can continue to work independently in the classroom, their lessons are discontinued, and new students begin individual instruction. Currently, Reading Recovery is being used at Monument and Hedgepeth-Williams schools.

This intensive intervention is used with students in Trenton grades 1 to 5 who are reading at least two years below grade level as is assessed by a placement test. The Sonday System is a phonics, reading, writing, and spelling program that is Orton-Gillingham based with lessons designed around a multi-sensory structure.
This intensive intervention is used with students in Trenton grades 3 to 12 who are reading at least two years below grade level as is assessed by a placement test. The lessons are carefully planned and sequenced to ensure sufficient practice and mastery of the skills that are introduced. Currently, Trenton is using the components of the program that focus on improving students’ decoding ability.
This intensive intervention is used with students in Trenton grades K to 3 who have been identified as at-risk for reading development. Wilson Fundations for K-3 is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. Fundations is based upon the Wilson Reading System principles and serves as a prevention program to help reduce reading and spelling failure. Fundations in action in Trenton! (Link to photos)

This intensive intervention is used with students in Trenton grades K – 3 who have been identified as at-risk for reading development. Project Read uses concrete examples and multi-sensory experiences to make abstract concepts memorable and meaningful. Teaching to transfer is stressed so that these concepts and skills become automatic and functional. Project Read focuses on stimulating multiple areas of the mind with visual, auditory, and tactile exercises. Project Read in action in Trenton! This intensive intervention is used with students in Trenton grades 6 to 8 who are reading at least two years below grade level as is assessed by a placement test. Read 180 uses technology, print, and professional development to address individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. This multi-sensory teaching approach is used in the Trenton School District to assist students to bridge manipulation and memorization. TouchPoints and counting aloud strategies are used to engage the visual learner, the auditory learner, and the kinesthetic learner. The IPDC provides opportunities for district-wide professional development focusing on strategies to assist the educational needs of our struggling learners. The center, located at Grant Elementary School Room BB5, is set up to demonstrate instructional practices based on current research. The IPDC maintains a collection of professional books, activity books, videos/DVDs, and instructional materials to support all areas of the general education curriculum on loan to teachers in the Trenton School District.
