Arbor Day

Joyce Kilmer Elementary School students recently celebrated Arbor Day.  Kevin Kopp, President and CEO of Environmental Youth Education Services, Inc. taught lessons and provided educational materials to teachers and students prior to the celebration.  At the Arbor Day assembly Mr. Kopp directed a lively sing-along of songs he had taught the children during their lessons.   Mayor Doug Palmer addressed the students and presented a proclamation to fifth grade student Miren Conway (who recited the poem, Trees by Joyce Kilmer).  Following the assembly students went to Cadwalader Park where they made crafts and had snacks.  The Arbor Day celebration concluded with students planting trees in the park.  Special thanks go out to Valerie Butler, principal, Mayor Doug Palmer, Mr. Kevin Kopp, Mrs. Kiersten Fleisher (Joyce Kilmer Elementary School kindergarten teacher), Mr. Paul Mitsis (Trees for Trenton organization) and Mr. Paul Baum (landscape architect, City of Trenton).

Joyce Kilmer Elementary School recently sponsored a career luncheon for eighth grade students.   Professionals from a wide range of fields attended the luncheon.  Eighth graders dressed in professional attire and interviewed the professionals, took notes and developed concept maps to enable them to ultimately progress through the career paths they chose.  Thanks to all the professionals who attended the luncheon and shared their time and expertise with our students.

Easter Baskets and Bunny

Field Day

Joyce Kilmer Elementary School students recently enjoyed Field Day which was organized by the specialist teachers.  Cadwalader Park was turned into a carnival with inflatable bouncers and slides, game stations, and a DJ who provided music for the event.  Many parents also volunteered to run game stations and snack stations which included watermelon, hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy.  Thanks to the specialist teachers at Kilmer and to Kilmer’s volunteer parents for providing the children with an enjoyable and memorable day.

Teacher of the Year

On March 20th the Kilmer faculty honored their “Teacher of the Year,” Olivia (Libby) Leggett.  Mrs. Leggett, a Trenton Central High School graduate, received her nursing training at Provident Hospital – Helene Fulde in Baltimore, MD. For several years she worked as an O.R. nurse in Newark and Princeton, then continued her professional education, earning a BS degrees in nursing.  Mrs. Leggett’s love of children and interest in making a difference in a child’s life brought her into the field of school nursing.  Her first school position was at Princeton High School and later she worked at MLK (JR1) - before coming to Kilmer in 1983.  Loved by faculty, students and parents, Kilmer is honored to recognize the service of Mrs. Leggett.  We are all very proud to have her as part of the Kilmer family.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Joyce Kilmer Elementary School students welcomed Gail Whitman from Quiver Farm in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania.  Ms. Whitman introduced the students to “Charlie the Turkey” and gave a wonderful presentation on the history of Thanksgiving.  Students had an opportunity to pet the turkey and to grind corn, as the pilgrims did.  This presentation was part of a series of activities that Joyce Kilmer School has planned for the school year which are designed to broaden the knowledge base of students and to improve test scores.
