Engineers Teaching Algebra

King Middle School’s eighth graders became Traffic Engineers for a day under the expert guidance of Marc Love from the Engineers Teaching Algebra program. During this presentation, students had to design a “safe and efficient” plan to control and time the traffic lights at a busy four corner intersection leading into The Mall at Anywhere, USA. The students were very successful in completing the task. Several students showed real promise as future traffic engineers.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School teachers take part in a KidBiz training session after.  Just what is KidBiz?

Every day, KidBiz3000 sends each student a news-based reading assignment. All children read about the same event - at their own reading levels - and then complete a set of related activities. Kids get their daily KidBiz3000 e-mail and they're off - working independently at their own level and pace

Applies reading skills to writing, technology and business
KidBiz3000
's applied learning centers reinforce literacy skills. A Writing Center teaches fundamentals of writing, a Technology Center offers lessons on commonly used software, and a stock market simulation helps students learn about business and the economy.

Students from The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School attend The Family Tools and Technology Program offered at the School.  The Family Tools and Technology (FTT) is an award-winning gender equity program that focuses on technological design and problem-solving while supporting the application of mathematics and scientific principles. Design and engineering activities in FTT are especially appropriate for both girls and boys (grades 4-7) and their parents/guardians.
