Objective: Students will be able to graph a function and find its domain and range. Students will be able to write the equation of a line using the form y = mx + b.

Activity-Ask students to describe in simple terms how to write the equation of a line. The steps should be numbered or otherwise organized in a logical way and des cribed using terminology from this lesson. You might also suggest that students provide examples or some other kind of visual aid to accompany their written instructions. After reviewing their work, ask for volunteers to share their instructions with the class or small groups of students.

Activity-Look in a magazine or newspaper for a line graph. Explain whether the graph is or is not an example of a function. If it is, what is its domain and range? Answers will vary but should reflect an understanding that a vertical line does not represent a function nor does a graph in which only one value of x is paired with more than one y-value (not a one-to-one correspondence).
