A Struggle with Math

  Taken from:

Do you like math? To some people, math is hard. They may enjoy words. They may like to write or make up stories. They would rather do that than do math problems. Some people just don't like math.

Some people find math to be very hard. It may not be that they don't like it. It may be that they cannot understand it without a lot of help. Some people have a condition called Dyscalculia. They find it hard to grasp math concepts like order and logic. It takes extra work and effort for them to understand how numbers relate. It does not come easy to them.

A person with Dyscalculia may have a hard time keeping track of a schedule or time. This is because time is measured in numbers.

They may have trouble with measurements. This can affect home projects or cooking.

They may not be able to remember basic math functions on a long-term basis. They may have trouble with adding or subtracting. They could struggle balancing a checkbook or keeping a budget.

They may not have a good sense of order or direction.

They may have trouble keeping track of games that involve scoring.

They may find it hard to remember names.

They may feel that they "can't" do math. They should be shown that there are ways for anyone to learn math. They can be taught with different methods. Teachers can use graphs or pictures. They can make math exercises into games. These help the person learn more easily.

If you or a friend struggle with any subject, encourage one another. Everyone learns differently. Don't make fun of others. They may be better at a different subject. It is important they know they are special no matter what.
