
Addition and Subtraction: By Checkbook
GRADE LEVEL: 7,8
OBJECTIvE: To develop an understanding of the need or adding
and subtraction skills and too begin an understanding of
check books.
MATERIALS:
A. Newspaper add section
B. Paper checkbook
C. Pencil, Paper
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:
Give each student his or her own Check Book (They can each create their own).
Give each student a newspaper. Students can also go to www.realtor.com, www.monster.com , www.cars.com , www.acme.com
Direct the students to: a) find a job b) purchase a home ,a car, food etc.
With an amount in the book to start (the weekly salary from the job) and fixed amounts added
once a week for the year.
Once a week you can add other expenses.
Balance amounts monthly.
Example: Bobby Starts with $2200 this month:
house payment 675
car payment 325
food 423
gasoline 95
entertainment 125
left ----
557 You can add other expense
such as insurance here
Do this once a week for the year to see who has the most
possessions or savings etc.
