Backstroke for Numbers
Target skill: Number
recognition
What kids can do: Go to
the swimming hole, dive in, and calculate! Scatter 20 sponge numbers (2 sets,
0-9) on a waxed or wooden floor. Then invite students to pair up. Have one
person in each pair-the “swimmer”-lay on a beach towel on his or her back; his
or her partner-the “steerer”-holds the swimmer's legs. Call out a multiplication
problem (or any single-digit calculation)-for instance, five times five. Pairs
race to calculate the answer, and the steerers push the swimmers around the room
to collect each digit.
