Endpoints, Line Segments, Rays and Collinear Points
NJ CCCS 4.2
Objective: Students will be able to introduce endpoints, line segments, lines, rays, and collinear points.
Activity-Ask students to prepare one set of cards with symbols or illustrations for line, line segment, endpoints, ray, plane, and collinear points. Also have them make a set of cards with terms line, line segment, endpoints, ray, plane, and collinear points and their definitions. Students can mix the two sets of cards and place them face down on a table. They can then play a game with the cards by matching definitions with illustrations.
Activity-Have groups of three students prepare a Basic Geometric Figure poster. Students should use string or yarn and paper dots and arrowheads to construct points, line segments, lines, and rays. The dots can represent endpoints and other collinear points on a line segment. Ask students to label their constructions and title their posters. Then display their work for reference.
Activity-Suggest that students look for and list examples of objects that could represent points, line segments, rays, lines, and planes in their community. For example, a left-turn arrow on a traffic signal could represent a ray, and a football field could be considered a plane through which line segments pass. Have students share their lists with the class.
