Objective: Students will
be able to identify the hypotenuse of a right triangle. Students will be able to
comprehend the proportionality of right triangles.
This is a two-part activity, both from the same Internet site. Go to
www.maa.org/mathland/mathland_11_4.html to read the Problem at the Art
Gallery. Part 1: Read about the map problem again. Then use a world atlas to see
how cartographers today differentiate territories. Part 2: Copy the diagram for
the 11-sided art gallery and Ivars Peterson's example solution. Work with other
students to find other possible triangulations.
