Surf + Sand Relay
Target skill: Calculations
What kids can do: Pile up lots of “sand” (equations on tan paper, turned upside
down) and “surf” (same on blue paper) on an imaginary beach. Put two sand piles
in opposite corners and surf piles in the other corners. Divide the class into
two teams and have each team line up across from a sand pile. Students race up
to one pile of sand, take the top piece, answer the equation, crumple up the
paper, then place it on the floor. The object is to make a “sandcastle.” After a
certain amount of time elapses and the sandcastles are made, let students race
to answer the surf problems, crumple, and throw at other teams' sandcastles to
knock them down!
