Helpful Strategies for Parents of Kindergarten Students

Books can be read out loud to your child or you can take turns reading out loud with them.

Some strategies that will help your children understand books are:

  • Before reading the book, look through the pictures but not at the end. Ask your child what he/she thinks is going to happen in the story. As you read the story discuss whether your child’s predictions have changed.

  • After you have read the story ask your child to retell the story. You may need to ask questions to help your child tell the story in order. (For example, How did the story begin? What happened next?)

  • As your child reads a book ask your child to recall things that occur in the book.

Students in Kindergarten should read 5 books from the list and complete at least one project from the list below.
