Helpful Strategies for Parents of 4th Grade Students

  •  Encourage your child to read every day.

  •  Make reading fun.

  •  Help your child select books that are not too easy and not too hard – just right.

  •  Keep reading to your child even after your child has learned to read.

  •  Talk to your child about your favorite books.

  •  Listen to your child read and show interest in the story.

  •  Be flexible and patient with your child.

  •  If your child is struggling with reading, ask for advice from teachers and librarians.

Project Choices

  1. Book Jacket - Create a new book jacket for the book. Include the title, illustrator, author and an image on the cover. On the inside flap write about a character, and on the back flap summarize the story.

  2. Stamp - Design a large postal stamp to honor the book you read and the author of the book. Your stamp should be the size of a regular sheet of paper, not be the size of a real stamp.

  3. Diorama – Use a shoebox to create a scene from the story or to display facts about a topic in an informational book.

  4. Create a Comic Book - Create a comic book of the story or important parts of the story.  Use speech bubbles for dialogue.

  5. Ten Facts - Create a "Ten Facts About [book title]" sheet that lists ten facts you learned from reading the book. The facts, written in complete sentences, must include details you didn't know before you read the book.
