The Trenton Board of Education recognizes the
tremendous impact that substance abuse can have on a pupil’s education and
development. Recent reports from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA)
indicate that substance abuse is by far the number one public health problem
in the United States. The National Association for Children of Alcoholics
estimates that there are 26.8 million children of addicted parents in the
United States and suggests that 11 million are under the age of 18.
Accordingly, the Board has established a
comprehensive and integrated, joint school-community program that provides
students with prevention, intervention, support and instructional services
in an effort to reduce the effects of substance abuse on the community as a
whole. The program encompasses a wide range of services which include but
are not limited to individual, group and family counseling; drug, alcohol
and violence education and prevention programs; parental education aimed at
raising drug-free children; and professional development for all district
employees. |
