What is I&RS Intervention  & Referral Services

Are you worried about your child?

Do you need to talk to someone who can find out what’s going on?

Sometimes children learn differently

Sometimes children need extra help to learn

The I&RS team was created to help students get what they need to learn in their school

environment.

Who is part of the I&RS team?

An I&RS team includes the child’s Parent(s) or care giver, child study team members, teachers, and other trained personnel.

When you are referred to the I&RS team what will happen?

First the team will meet and make a plan to gather all the information available about your child – from you, your child’s teachers, the school, and anyone else involved with your child’s well being.

Next, the team will discuss with you what would help your child the most, and the team will decide if your child needs further evaluation or they will work with you to put together an action plan to provide the supports the child needs.

Referral Process

Where can you go for help ? If your child’s needs are beyond what the school is qualified to do, the I&RS team will give you information on where help can be found and how to explain to others what you need.

What can  the I&RS  Team Provide?

Interventions

What does your child need ? What can your child’s school do to make school a success for your child? Does he or she need a little extra help in math ? Does she or he need testing to find out why they aren’t learning as they should?

The IRS team will evaluate your child’s progress and look for areas where the school can give your child extra supports or maybe a different way for your child to learn.

Services

A little extra help now can make a big difference later.

When your child first shows signs of struggling with his/her school work it is time to act. Just a small amount of extra help now can avoid many problems later. Talk to your school about how they can help.

What if the team feels your child needs more help?

If you and the rest of your team decide that your child is in need of more services that the I&RS team can handle, then your child will be referred to one of the district’s child study teams for further evaluation. The child study team will evaluate your child, meet with you and anyone you bring to the meeting to discuss the results of the evaluations, and decide if your child is eligible for special education services.

How to contact the I&RS team at your school:

There is an I&RS team at each of the schools in Trenton. Contact your school for the name of the contact person in your school.
