them to services helpful both to them and perhaps family members. We continue to encourage recommendations/suggestions from the school on any student who may benefit from the mediation process. They are held each Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 4pm.  All that is needed is the student name and the issues they are having as it relates to attendance and truancy; we will do the rest.

Also, if any of you have yet to meet your assigned attendance officer, please let us know.

October is safety month and in this issue we will discuss and provide safety tips.

As we embark on the month of October, we remember there are several holiday and religious observances.  Not to forget the all important day of Halloween for the little ones.

The focus of this month’s issue will be on the subject of safety throughout the district.

Before, we discuss safety, the attendance officers have been visiting homes(1014) of those students who have yet to report. We remind all building principals to please forward to us your no-show lists so we can investigate the whereabouts of these students.

 Thus far this school year we have apprehended thirty-two(32) students off city street.  While this is not

necessarily good for the Truancy Center, it speaks volumes about how well our program may be working.  It is suggest that we are hopefully pushing kid into safe havens during school hours.  This  is exactly what we want as a district and from a city perspective is that students remain off the streets when not in attendance at school.  This ensures that our young people stay out of trouble.  We have held one hundred and ten (110) mediations which have resulted in opportunities to address some psycho/social needs of students and their families as well as getting students back on track in terms attending school regularly, meeting their academics needs and linking
