As stated in the State Board resolution, school districts may adopt additional religious holidays at the discretion of the district board of education. The list adopted by the State Board and the addendum is not meant to be an exhaustive one but rather to provide districts with a minimum list of holidays on which it shall be mandatory to excuse a pupil. Furthermore, the law provides that in order for a student to receive an excused absence from school because of a religious holiday that is not listed on the State Board resolution or a list of religious holidays adopted by a local school board, the student must present a written excuse signed by a parent or person standing in place of a parent. In accordance with the provisions at N.J.S.A. 18A:36-14 through 16 and N.J.A.C. 6A:32-8.3(j). |
