Any professional staff member to whom it appears that a pupil
may be under the influence of alcoholic beverages or other drugs on
school property or at a school function shall report the matter as
soon as possible to the school nurse or medical inspector and the
principal.
1. In the absence on the principal, his or her designee
shall be notified.
2. In instances where the school nurse, medical
inspector or the principal are not in attendance, the staff member
responsible for the function shall be immediately notified.
3. The pupil shall be removed to a protective
environment for observation and care.
4. The principal or his/her designee shall immediately
notify the parent or guardian and the chief school administrator and
arrange for an immediate examination of the pupil. The examination
may be performed by a physician selected by the parent or guardian
or by the medical inspector. If the chosen physician is not
immediately available, the examination shall be conducted by the
medical inspector, or, if the medical inspector is not available,
the pupil shall be accompanied by a member of the school staff,
designated by the principal, to the emergency room nearest hospital
for examination. If available, a parent or guardian should also
accompany the pupil.
5. If the parent cannot be reached immediately, and the
pupil is taken to a local emergency room by the school staff, the
principal or his/her designee shall appoint a teaching staff member
or guidance counselor to continue to attempt to reach the
parent/guardian.
6. If, at the request of the parent or legal guardian,
the medical examination is conducted by a physician other than the
medical inspector, such examination shall not be at the expense of
the district board of education. If the student is taken to the
emergency room by school personnel, the school district shall be
responsible for the cost of the examination.
